Relocating to a different city or even a different state can be scary, but with a little planning on your part, the transition can be a smooth one.  Take it from a recovering military brat who moved every 2-3 years of her life, relocating to a new place, different country included, came with the territory.  I became a pro at relocating.

There are three stages to RELOCATION.

  1. Research your move

  2. The moving process

  3. Settling in

Let's go into some detail on each.

Research Your Move

Google the new town you are moving to and see what comes up.  Here a few tidbits to enter into google to get you going.

  • Top 10 things to do

  • Best Burger Joints

  • Cost of living

  • Schools and how they rank (if you have children)

  • Average home prices

  • Average drive time to/from work

  • Anything important to you: Biking Trails, Square Dancing, Opera, Symphony etc.

Here are some other ideas to help.

  • Contact a local realtor to help with your information search at your new location

  • Get moving Quotes from relocation companies

  • Make a list of all the points you want to cover before, during and after the move so you don't expend too much energy trying to remember

Moving Process

  • Do you have a home to sell before you move?  If so, how many days are average on market for it to sell.  You want to time the move so you can also move in to your new place concurrently.

  • Visit your new town you are going to live in and start to look at places to live that fit your lifestyle.  Once you have an idea of area, narrow your search to exactly what you want.

  • Interview moving companies and have one ready for your move date.

  • Start cleaning out your closets, attics and basements to get rid of old things you no longer need or want.

  • Plan what you are going to take with you in the car with you. Make sure to bring special items for your children - toys, stuffed animals, dolls or board games.

  • If you have children, have a list of fun things to do with them for when you get to your final destination.  It will soften the blow of leaving their old friends behind

  • Remind everyone that this is an adventure if you make it one.

  • Pack least used items first.

  • Call your doctors to get medical records forwarded or at least a copy to take with you.

  • Send out change of address cards.

  • Call utility companies on both sides.  One to turn off and one to turn on.

  • Label all your boxes well.  Room the items belong in and detail of items in the box.

  • Put 10 boxes aside for last minute items such as bedding and things you find on moving day that have not been packed or do not fit in the car.

Settling In

You have arrived at your destination and your new place is filled with boxes.  Now what?

  • Get bedding on all beds a soon as possible.

  • Set up one room to completion to give some normalcy to life

  • Meet your neighbors

  • Take advantage of facilities or internet sites that give tourist information and things to do in town.

  • Find the local farmers market

  • Register your vehicle

  • Register children for school

  • Find the nearest Swimming pool if you have kids

  • Check to see if there is a local YMCA for children activities

  • Locate your new Health Care Providers

  • Contact your Insurance Company to make the switch

These are just a few ideas to help with your relocation.  The internet has a plethora of information to help in planning your relocation.  Let your fingers do some of the walking and you will find what you need to keep peace of mind.
